We hope this message finds you in the
middle of your best holiday season ever, doing the things you love most
with the people you love best! Whatever your traditions, however you celebrate
the holidays, wherever you travel to make this season bright, make some good
memories and eat some good food.
Speaking of food (and of
course we are speaking about food), isn't it amazing how so much of our holiday
traditions surround the meals that we eat and when and how we eat them. Food is people glue someone once told me, and nowhere is
it more evident than the holidays. The specific foods that we eat are so
important: everyone has their holiday favorites (mine are turkey and mashed
potatoes and mom's apple pie) and their "must haves" that help complete the
holidays. The specifics may vary, but the overall theme is simply this:
gathering together around the table to share a meal is very connecting on so
many levels. It is a common ground we all share (we all gotta eat), it is a
chance to converse and share thoughts, ideas, and our feelings, and by bringing
our favorite dish to the feast we get an opportunity to show our love and
gratitude.
Perhaps this is why food
is people glue. It helps us come together in a world where so many things can
easily pull us apart. It is a chance to take something ordinary (eating food)
and make it extra-ordinary. And you know, that is not such a bad way to start
the New Year, with the plan to make the ordinary things (we so often take
for granted) extraordinary (at least in our hearts and minds.) Some
people call this "living intentionally", others call it "gracious living", but
it really does not matter the label we put on it. The important thing is that
we seize the day and make every ride around the sun one that we are proud
of and one that leaves this world just a little better than we found
it.
May you find peace and happiness in
2010 and celebrate the "ordinary" things in new and "extraordinary"
